Medical Surveillance

Some exposures require more than health surveillance. Where your people work with lead, asbestos or ionising radiation, the law requires statutory medical surveillance by an appointed doctor, with certification, defined intervals, and the power to suspend an employee from work. We deliver it on your site, anywhere in the UK.

About the service

How Medical Surveillance works with OccuMed

Medical surveillance is not health surveillance under a more serious name. It is a separate duty, imposed by separate regulations, and it can only be carried out by a doctor appointed by the HSE.

That distinction catches employers out. A provider can run your audiometry and skin checks perfectly well and still be unable to touch your lead workers or your classified persons, because the person doing the assessment has to hold an appointment most clinicians do not. If you work with lead, asbestos or ionising radiation and your current programme has not made that clear to you, it is worth asking who signed the last certificate.

We deliver statutory medical surveillance under appointed doctor arrangements, on site, alongside the rest of your occupational health programme. Same clinics, same reporting, same records, one provider.

  1. 01

    Lead Medicals

Statutory medical surveillance under the Control of Lead at Work Regulations 2002, for employees whose exposure is significant or whose blood-lead results require it. Includes clinical assessment by the appointed doctor, biological monitoring, and management of action and suspension levels.

  2. 02

    Asbestos Medicals

Medical examinations and certification under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, for employees carrying out licensed work with asbestos and for notifiable non-licensed work, at the intervals the regulations set.

  3. 03

    Classified Radiation Workers

Medical surveillance under the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 for classified persons, including the entry medical before designation, periodic review, and the health record the appointed doctor is required to certify.

  4. 04

    Biological Monitoring

Blood lead and other biological monitoring arranged, tracked and interpreted, with results returned against the relevant action and suspension levels rather than as raw numbers.

  5. 05

    Suspension and Return

Where a result requires suspension from work, we advise you on what that means operationally, what has to change before return, and what the appointed doctor will need to see. This is the part employers find hardest and the part most providers leave you to work out.

  6. 06

    Statutory Records and Certification

Health records for this work must be kept for at least 40 years. We hold yours securely, maintain the certification trail, and hand everything over in full if you move provider.

In summary

  • Meet your duties under CLAW 2002, CAR 2012 and IRR 2017, delivered by an appointed doctor.
  • Certification, biological monitoring, suspension management and 40-year records in one place.
  • Delivered on your site alongside the rest of your occupational health programme.
